Dedication On July 11, 2002 my wife Barbara and I celebrated our 15th Wedding Anniversary and five days later we Started this recording project in Dallas. God uses the small things in our lives sometimes in a miraculous way, and that's how this project came about. Barbara looked at my calendar and noticed that it was full every month except July, and she asked me," Do you think the reason you have only a few dates in July is because God wants you to do a new CD?" Almost immediately I called my producer Tom Smith and asked him to set aside two weeks in July for a possible recording session. The rest is history. New songs, peace and provision came and here's the result. It is with great pride, love and devotion that I dedicate this recording to my wonderful wife Barbara for her love, faithfulness and commitment to the Lord and to our family. Thank you sweetheart for standing right beside me as we serve the Lord together. Thanks I am so thankful Lord that You have allowed our family and ministry to be just a small part of what You are doing in these days. From barbeques to prisons to Churches, we have been given the privilege of going wherever You ring our phone to go and to know that You will provide for us. That provision has come from all of the families, churches and ministries that have co-labored with us through their love, support and prayers. Thank you Lord for providing for this recording, our family and our ministry through wonderful people who love You and love us. May we as a family have the faith and wisdom to continue to serve You with our whole heart and to stay as far away from the fence of mediocrity and compromise as we possibly can. In Jesus name, Amen. The Story Behind The Songs Many times people ask how a song was written or how I decided to record it. I hope you enjoy the story behind some of the songs on this recording. The idea for the title song, Get Off The Fence came from Terry Ankrom. In January 2002, we ate pizza at his house and before we left, half of the song was written and within a couple of months I had finished the song. Little did I know that it would be the title cut on this CD several months later. God's Way was written about three weeks before the recording session and is not just a song but our lifestyle. My close friend Jerry Balswick, told me that his dad used to say that it was sad that people were always Wise Too Late And Old Too Soon and a couple of months later I wrote the song in a motel in Waco, Texas. In December 2001, I sang at an Opry in La Grange, Texas and met Donnie Blanz. A few months later, Dave Zarbaugh gave me a demo of the song, There's a Hand (Guiding Me) written by Donnie. Barbara and I loved it. With This Ring came out of Terry Ankrom's desire to write a wedding song for his sister-in-law. I took the ideas, added a few words and a melody, and a song was birthed. The Shape I'm In was written four weeks before the session on a trip to California with my daughter Bethany. I used to tell my friend Jerry Roberts, '' You're in pretty good shape for the shape you're in'' and Bethany and I finally wrote the song. How Can I Be Sure was written several years ago and was in my filing cabinet. I found it and sang it for my Uncle Henry and my mother in June and they said that I had to record it. I wrote the chorus for Eighteen Inches From Heaven many years ago, but I wrote the verses in November 2001 shortly after a man who had been raised in the church all of his life realized that he had Jesus in his head but not his heart. Everything finally dropped eighteen inches and he gave his heart to Jesus. I sang It Is Well My Soul at dad's funeral an October 1991 and knew that I had to record it. In May 2001, I sang at a Gospel Music Convention In Fraserburgh, Scotland and toured a $7 million fishing vessel named Forever Grateful. I was challenged to write a song with the title, and I wrote the song and sang it during my final performance at the convention. I pray that the songs on this recording will encourage you to let people see Jesus in You and to help others to Get Off The Fence.
